In 1981, Russo wrote The Culluloid Closet:Homosexuality in the Movies, looking at the treatment and portrayal of gay and lesbian characters in film, Biographer Michael Schiavi draws on archival material, letters, interviews and conversations with Russo's friends and family members. Schiavi is an associate professor at the New York Institute of Technology.
