Red Morocco binding decoratively tooled with gilt. A.E.G. with sewn silk bookmark [4] 86 p.p. Includes engraved frontispiece. Separate half-title for Syrus [his work starts on p. 75] continuous pagination. From the library of [Victor] Leon Rattier [1824-1902], his red and gilt seal stamped on verso of front free endpaper. Rattier was made Chevalier in 1861, upon receiving the Legion d'honneur, the highest award for military and or civil merits in France. Bookplate of former United Nations interpreter [Victor] de Guinzbourg on front pastedown endpaper. Light scuffs to boards. A small stain to lower front board. Some wear to spine ends, gentle bruising to corners. Sporadic foxing. Interior clean, near fine. Gaius Julius Phaedrus (1 CE) was a fable writer credited with completing the first Latin translation of Aesop's fables. Publilius Syrus (84-43 BC) wrote proverbs, adages, and moral maxims.
