Brown cloth with pictorial boards stamped in gilt and black. A.e.g. Moire endpapers. Vol I: XXIV, 327 p.p.; Vol. II: xxii, 388 p.p. Frontis with tissue guards, plus numerous b/w illustrations throughout, both full page and in-text in both volumes. Wear to joints, rubbing to boards, edges. Light fraying at corners, spine ends. Small chip to head of front free endpaper in vol. I, text unaffected; a tiny tear to foot of p. 273, but illustration unaffected. A slight crack to inner hinge on p. 327. Some stains to endpapers, sporadic smudges throughout. Otherwise interior clean. A handsome two volume set in very good condition. George Ebers [1837-1898] was a German Egyptologist and Professor at Leipzig University. He is famous for discovering a rare Egyptian papyri of herbal medicine in Thebes that dates to 1550 B.C. Known as the Ebers Papyrus,it is one of the most well preserved of its kind. In addition to his archaeological writing, Ebers penned historical fiction, using his knowledge of Egypt as a setting, romanticizing its myths and legends that helped to popularize the work of early Egyptologists. 0.
