While working for his family firm Allen & Son solicitors, Edward Heron-Allen [1861-1943] became a friend of famous French violin maker Georges Chanot III, whose shop was closeby, inspiring Allen to create some of his own violins. In addition to his writings on the history of the violin and violin making, he was also fascinated by and wrote prolifically on a range of subjects, including marine zoology and the study of foraminifera, local history, archaeology, palmistry as well as science fiction published under the pseudonym Christopher Blayre. A Persian scholar, he is also noted for his translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayam.
