Features [4] plates of illustrations incl. frontispiece, plus [4] folding colour maps showing the voyages of John Davis, English explorer who searched for a Northwest Passage, spanning three expeditions from 1585-1587. Davis was also the inventor of the navigational instrument the backstaff, used measure the altitude of the sun and moon. Clements Robert Markham [1830-1916] was a geographer and secretary to the Royal Geographical Society, where he would later be president. Bookplate of A.P. Thornton on front pastedown. Boards somewhat scuffed. Spine tilted. Bruising at spine ends with fraying at head. Corners slightly bumped. Some trimming to edges. Light offsetting to title-page from frontispiece tissue guard. Otherwise a very good copy.
