The appendix of a very rare 3 volume set. lxxxvii. Brown ribbed cloth, gilt-stamped cover lettering, spine reads "Appendix" in gilt. Bookplate to front pastedown, and a second (that of C.B. Farrar) to FFEP. Covers lightly scuffed with chipping to spine ends, a bit of rubbing to corners, a few spots of foxing to interior, clipping to upper corner of seven pages, else a very good copy of a scarce item. Harris was a spiritualist born in 1823, who established the society known as the "Brotherhood of the New Life." There was no written creed or form of government, and the system appeared to combine the doctrines of Plato in philosophy, Swedenborg in spiritual science, and Fourier in sociology. At one point, Lady Oliphant and her son, Laurence Oliphant were residents of this community.
