First Edition. Full vellum, decorated with gilt boarders, gilt devices on spine, a.e.g. with elegant gauffered edges, marbled endpapers. vii, 235 pp., [5]; [4], 277 pp., [7], containing [6] engravings, including the frontis portraits of author and Lady Jane Gray, engraved title page vignettes in each volume, and on half title of poem Ferney: An Epistle to Mons. De Voltaire in second vol. 2. Bookplate of Ann Whitacre on front pastedown, early ownership signature in ink at head of title page. Sporadic foxing, text worn pp. 174-5 [affecting some text to lower half of page] with perforation to p. 179-80 (text unaffected), some trimming to frontispiece in vol. 2 [not affecting portrait], soiling to spine, light smudging to boards, small orange stain to foot of rear board [vol. 2], light wear at edges, lower front joint of vol. 2 splitting, but still strong. In green slipcase. A very good copy. George Keate [1729-1797] was a writer, painter, and naturalist. In his introduction, Keate writes: "Eight of the longer poems in this collection have appeared many years since, at different periods, and have been very favourably received by the Public. To the candour of the same Public I submit these Volumes."
