Limited edition, copy #132 /550. Printed at the Oxford University Press. 61 p.p., [3 p.p.]. Twelve colour plates with beautiful illustrations. Introductory note by Edmund Gosse. Half bound in cream calf with geometric paper boards, title in gilt to spine and to onlay on front board. Damp staining to boads, sunning to head, calf lightly soiled, wear to edges and corners, bumping to corners, a few scuffs. Watermarks to mould-made paper. Some offsetting to pages, as well as some light staining and a few smudges. The Recruiting Officer is a 1706 play by the Irish writer George Farquhar, which follows the social and sexual exploits of two officers, the womanising Plume and the cowardly Brazen, in the town of Shrewsbury (the town where Farquhar himself was posted in this capacity) to recruit soldiers.
