A wireless call from Scotland Yard for information concerning a maroon-colored car leads ot a lonely house named "Tangles" where lies the dead body of a man whom Claire Merrell said was her uncle. Then a second car is found - same colour, same model, even the same license number. Two men are dead - two of the four implicated in the plot, but two more remain at large - and there is $150,000 at stake. The police struggle to find just where Merrell fits into the ingenious crime.
