Autographed envelope from James A.Garfield with Washington D.C. Congressional postage stamp dated Jan 10, 1870. Addressed to Burke Aaron Hinsdale, Hiram College in Portage County, Ohio. James A. Garfield was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his death by assassination six and a half months later. He was the first sitting memeber of the Congress to elected to the presidency, and remains the only sitting House member to gain the White House. He also studied law, was ordained as a minister in the Disciples of Christ Church, and served as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1870, the year for which this envelope is dated, Garfield was serving as a member of the House Banking Committee. In 1857, Garfield returned to his alma mater of the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (later renamed Hiram College) as a professor of ancient languages and soon became the school's president at the age of 25. B.A. Hinsdale rose to be one of America's most notable pioneers in education, who also wrote prolifically on his former student and then colleague. He served as president of Hiram College from 1870 until 1882. On July 2, 1881, Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington D.C. by Charles J. Guiteau, but the wound was not immediately fatal. Garfield did not succumb until September 19, 1881.
