The first printing of the works of the late antique Christian writer Synesius of Cyrene, edited and printed by Adrian Turnebe, who had been appointed the King's Printer of Greek in 1552 to King Henry II of France. Synesius was born in Cyrene, a Grecian colony in what is now eastern Libya, sometime between 360 and 375 A.D. He eventually ventured to Alexandria, where he studied under Hypatia, the most famous pagan teacher of her time. He considered himself a pagan and was a neo-Platonist philosopher, yet was selected as Bishop of Ptolemais, an important center in early Christianity, late in his life.
