Set in eastern Ontario, the story has a prologue set in the atmosphere of a village at a time just before the First World War and opens in a town, Rossac, on the St. Lawrence River, following the interlinking lives of characters from the endof the Second World War through the 1950s, and into the "new morality" of the 1960s and 1970s.
