This book was the first to review the archaeology of prehistoric India in relation to that of Western Asia as a whole. The story of Indian origins is discussed from the remotely ancient Palaeolithic period onwards, though the body of the book deals with the Bronze Age of western and northern India between about 3000 and 1500 BC, which as produced most of the available archaeological material.
