Mr. Polk's War is usually called the Mexican War. it is a greater struggle between the two American political parties than between America and Mexico. It began when the United States admitted the Republic of Texas to the Union. Mexico considered Texas her possession. The invasion of Mexico by the US was largely instigated by President Polk, who felt that a war would improve his party's image and thus ensure his winning the next presidential election. So he declared war but lost the election anyway. This was a curious war, with generals chosen or replaced because of their political alignments. One of its generals became the next president. Others would be the leaders in the terrible Civil War, which was soon to begin. The experienced writing team of Bob and Jan Young has clarified and captured the essence of this war.
