Full mottled calf, raised spine bands, gilt compartments, red title label, gilt filet to outer edge. Marbled endpapers. A.E.R. 484 pp. Green ribbon marker. Some scuffing to calf. Library shelf label to upper corner of flyleaf. Some light staining to interior, with a few words obscured by ink or rust stains. Stamp of Bibliotheque de Juilly to foot of title page, with offsetting to verso of flyleaf from the ink. Pierre Nicole [1625-1695] was a French theologian, critic of Protestantism, and proponent of a Catholic reform movement known as Jansenism. He was also a friend of Blaise Pascal, and translated his Provincial Letters into Latin under a pseudonym. [Catholic Encyclopedia].
