George Lavington [1684-1762] was the Bishop of Exeter and, during his lifetime was a strong opponent of Methodism. Upon its first publication in 1749, the Enthusiasm of methodists and Papists became his most famous work in which Lavington "paraded the natural excesses commited by the original followers of John Wesley."
