Saint Teresa of Avila [1515-1582] was a Spanish noblewoman and Carmelite nun. Her writings are regarded for her mysticism, philosophical thinking and practice of Christian meditation. In 1559, Teresa claimed to receive manifestations of Jesus that lasted a period of two years. Avila was influenced by St. Augustine's Confessions, and through the Spanish Inquisition she was a monastic reformer.
