Marcellin Berthelot (1827-1907) was a French scientist and professor at College de France in Paris. Berthelot believed that all chemical reactions depend on the physical forces that can be measured. He proved that organic compounds can be formed by ordinary methods of chemical manipulation and obey the same principles as inorganic substances. He was the recipient of the Davey Medal (1883) and the Copley Medal (1900) for his scientific achievements. Berthelot was interested in and published a variety of texts on the history of chemistry and alchemy, including Les Origines des l'alchemie (1885). This book includes chapters on the history of magical formulas, metals and planets, alchemetical apparatus, chemistry of the months, vapors and sulphurs, secrets of the ancients and more. Originally issued in parts, 1887-8.
