Bookplate of Eugene Lemoine Didier on front pastedown, and his handwriting to various pages throughout book. Front inner hinge cracked, damp staining and foxing to leaves, heavy wear to spine and corners, otherwise a good copy. A collection of 31 magazine articles written and bound by Didier dating from 1863-1883, which appeared in Scribner's Monthly, Harpers New Monthly, The American Exchange Review, New Quarterly Review and others. Articles include: Recent Biographies of Edgar Allan Poe, Baltimore Buonaparte's, The Calvert Family, Monthly Gossip, and other editorials from Didier. DIDIER, Franklin James. Alph Giroux, print publishers and picture dealers on Rue du Coc St. Honore, No. 7 on rear pastedown; edges and corners worn, and rounded with wear, stain on upper front board, joints splitting with small chip to spine head, bowed boards. A very good nice copy. Contains 30 handwritten entries, beginning Jan. 4, 1818 by Franklin James Didier [1794-1840] was an American physician and letter writer. Many of the topics and places written in Didier's journal entries, such as his visits to the Catacombs, the Chapel of Tuileries, Montpellier and the French Academy also appear in his "Letters from Paris and Other Cities of France, Holland &c." originally published in 1821, and written between 1816-1820, following Franklin's residence abroad [Maryland Biographical Dictionary, pp. 186-7]. The label at foot of rear pastedown bearing the name of Chez. Alph Giroux, was a shop which specialized in artists' suppliers, print publishers, picture dealers and restorers [National Portrait Gallery: British Artists' suppliers, 1650-1950]. Alphonse Giroux [1799-1840] was a leading Paris entrepreneur, whose shop was located at 7 Rue du Coq, Paris, between 1806-1870. DIDIER, Franklin James. A Journey to the South of France.
