Seven Books of the Attic Antiquities, 7th Edition Enlarged and Corrected by Zachary Bogan, 1671]. Orig. brown speckled calf with contemporary spine reback and new red leather label titled in gilt, red edges,Silk Ribbon Bookmark. [5] 270pp, [18pp index]; [6] 266pp, [14pp index]; [12], 375pp, [9pp index]. Bookplate of Lord Ankerville on front pastedown. Light staining on top-edges of textblock, foxing and browning, edges trimmed [partially affecting text on p. 106, book 2], worming in book 3, *3 [affecting small part of text], boards worn, fraying at corners, but in fact a very good copy. Thomas Godwyn D.D. (1587-20 March 1642) was an English headmaster and scholar whose first book discusses the Roman Empire and Roman History, from its city, culture, deities, games, laws, wars, etc. The second book by Godwyn details rites and ceremonies used by the Hebrews and comparing them to similar, pagan rituals and customs. The third book by Rous [1581-1689] and Bogan's [1625-1659], religious and puritan writers, covers religion, superstition, customs, burials and history of the Athenian [Greek] city states of Athens and the surrounding territory of Attica.
