Green limp patterned cloth with printed paper label on upper front cover, xx, 156pp. Frontispiece, illustrated title page plus in-text illustrations, light damp staining at upper corners, bookplate with light staining on front endpapers, boards and spine sunned with soil on lower front board, but in fact very good. An English astronomer, Robert Main [1808-1878] was the honorary secretary, vice president and president of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1841-1861. He was director at University of Oxford's Radcliffe Observatory. Rudimentary Astronomy is his textbook, in which he discusses astronomical instruments, planets, fixed stars and comets, the motion of the sun during the eclipse, and other observations. The lunar crater Main is named after Robert Main, and there is also a crater on Mars named after him.
