Dark blue buckram, original blue wrapper spine and cover laid on, vii, [1] 254pp, [1], pages lightly browned, bookplate and ex-library name on front endpapers, 'printed in Poland stamped on foot of title page and front lower front board, boards a bit faded, sunned but near fine. Stefan Banach (1892-1945) was educated at the Institute of Technology at Lviv; his doctoral thesis laid the foundation for modern functional analysis, which has been in print for over 6 decades. He made major contributions to general topology, set theory and theory of measure and integration, and the general theory of linear spaces, or, vector spaces. His introduction of normed linear spaces are now called Banach spaces. Banach himself was one of the editors of this monograph series, with Theorie des Operations Lineaires being the first, quickly becoming a classic. This is the First Monograph on Functional Analysis. The Burning of Warsaw University Library during WWII destroyed a large part of the stock of these Monograph Series Books Banach is remembered one of Poland's greatest mathematicians.
