Blue cloth decorated in gilt, red edges, 280pp, illustrated with [18] vignettes and [9] maps, bottom corner of p.35 [no loss to text], heavy foxing, bookplate to front pastedown, owner name free endpaper, spine darkened, light spotting on front and rear board, otherwise very good. An extremely popular work on geology. Simonin studied at the school of mines in Saint Etienne, from which he graduated in 1852. In 1867 he was placed at the head of a French commission charged to study the laying out of the Pacific railroad and the preliminary surveys, and in his report greatly praised the work [The MIneralogical Record].
