2 Volumes, Creme cloth, xl, 683pp; 693-1441pp, illustrated throughout with colour and black and white photos, [5pp] map of the People's County. Light wear on tips. Fine in original slipcase, somewhat soiled and worn. The Sacred Mountain documents Events from Cheyenne oral traditions, ceremonial knowledge, warrior accounts, and family histories. Peter J. Powell (1928-2022) was an accomplished historian and scholar of the Plains Indians. According to the American Indian Health Service of Chicago, "on both the 1982 National Book Award in History and the Anisfield-Wolf Award in Race Relations. He began writing by kerosene lantern in Big Horn, WY, and finished both works at his scholarly home, the Newberry Library." He was President of the Foundation for the Preservation of American Indian Art and Culture, was a member of the Northern Cheyenne Chiefs Society since 1964, was also an adopted member of the Apsáalooke Tribe, the Adopted Son of the late Tom Yellowtail noted Apsáalooke Holy Man and Sundance priest and his wife Susie Yellowtail [The Brinton Museum].
