The first Gay Games to be proudly held in the Southern Hemisphere, originally conceived of in 1980 and organized for the first time in San Francisco in 1982. The 6th Gay Games in Sydney saw seven days of sports of two weeks of cultural festivities. There were over 12,400 registrants from 79 countries, participating in 31 sports. Music from the opening ceremony featured the KD Lang track, "You'll Never Walk Alone."
