Elegant plum morocco binding by famed Scottish binder James MacDonald of New York (his stamp on recto of front free end-paper, gilt fillets and gilt lettered spine, with six compartments in gilt double filleted boarders, inner dentelle edges and pink, marbled end-papers, half-title in red and black ink, 318pp, [2], Text in French, printed on large paper original printed wrappers bound in, untrimmed sheets, end-papers lightly sunned, outer hinge slightly worn. Fine. Le Cabaret De La Belle Femme was a a cycle of First World War Tales by Dorgele - the companion piece to his celebrated Les Crois de Bois - which here is added two pieces, "Ici repose Cadinot" and "Grousse d'Ali" and restores the three chapters previously withheld from the first Croix de Bois at the demand of the military censors: "La Boule de Gui", "L'Ennemi des Vieux," and "Permissionaires." The binding is a fine distinction. James MacDonald was a Scottish binder trained under the great American Binder William Matthews, who opened his own New York bindery in 1880. It became one of the most esteemed in the country. A wonderful, French wartime classic, great for collectors of Dorgeles, Great War literature, and fine American binding.
