This Second Edition of the first Canadian collected writings of Champlain and a foundational, scholarly gathering of his voyages. The first printing of the Second Edition, in progress since the 1860s was destroyed by fire in 1869, just as the volumes were ready for publication, with only proof sheets surviving. The 1870 issue is the earliest obtainable state of the work. Highly important for collectors of Canadiana and notable for Laverdiere's much debated contention that the Jesuits had altered the text of Champlain's 1632 Voyages. An incredibly handsome set and a cornerstone of any collection on New France, the St. Lawrence River and early exploration of Canada.
