Aurora, ILL. C.A. Borgadus, 1898. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 12mo. Very Good. Item #017739

Burgundy cloth, the front board paneled and decorated in blind, lettered in gilt, 192pp, B&W frontispiece of the author and his shotgun, illustrated coin tables in the text, light foxing and occasional smudges, toning to text-block, faded marbled end-papers, a sticker ghost on lower corner of rear free end-paper, tips of corners somewhat worn and gently frayed, heavy sunning to front board and spine, round cup stains on front board. Very Good. Adam Henry Bogardus, [1834-1913] known by his nickname C.A. Bogardus was a 19th century sharpshooter, inventor, and author. Having held the quick shot record, he is also credited with inventing glass ball targets. His 'secrets' emphasized that a knowledge of gold and silver was essential on the path to wealth. The book covers several different themes, ranging from chemicals, coin recipes for items including caramels to remove freckles, or to make hair soft and glossy, cement, and things like 'well known facts to settle many arguments.' The author also turns his attention to medicine, accidents, poison antidotes, candy-making, rare coin values, and Loisette's celebrated system of memory. The volume closes with maxims from Poor Richard's Almanac and Bogardus's own speeches delivered at Farmington, Iowa, Decatur Indiana and Jacksonville Illinois, as he argues for bimetallism and free silver in the wake of th 1896 Bryan campaign. One Thousand Secrets of Rich and Wise Men is a characteristic self published and self styled household recipe book, given an unusual twist from its trick shot author and populist political coda. Not to be confused with the better known trap shooter Captain A.H. Bogardus. Bogardus and his sons went on to tour with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. Captain Bogardus remained with the show for a year. Bogardus is in the National Trapshooting Hall of Fame.
